Haaretz comments: "The pictures from Amona were difficult. The violence
carried out by the rioters, deliberately and intentionally, even crossed the
blurred and dangerous borders the settlers have established in previous
clashes with the police and the army. The police officers who came to
implement the evacuation order were received with insults, and were hit and
attacked by a barrage of rocks and pieces of metal. Many were wounded. All
endangered their lives in carrying out the assignment. The settlers'
arguments that the police treated the "protesting" youths violently is
scandalous. The settler leaders were the ones who promised that "blood will
be spilled," encouraged the youths to entrench themselves on the rooftops
and prepare for a violent confrontation, and committed themselves to
avenging the 'disgrace of Gush Katif.' Those who send their children to use
unrestrained wildness in a struggle against the representatives of the rule
of law, and choose to transform a legal evacuation into a symbolic bloody
battle are the ones responsible for the blows, the wounds and even the
spilling of blood if, heaven forbid, there were to be any."
The Jerusalem Post writes: "In a democratic society, civil disobedience is a
time-honored form of protest. Streaming to a closed military zone to protest
the legal actions of the state is perhaps understandable. However, when
security forces arrive, protesters must go willingly or at least not
violently resist arrest or removal. That is how citizens of democracies
protest government decisions. MKs Effi Eitam, Arieh Eldad and Benny Elon
were injured during the clashes yesterday. We wish them a speedy recovery,
but the purpose of their presence in Amona must be questioned.
Representatives of the state engaged in making laws should not be on the
side of the lawbreakers. By participating in the protest, they were
effectively undermining the rule of law they are sworn to uphold. Their
place is on the floor of the Knesset, not the roof of an illegal house in
Amona. The impression left by this terrible incident is that the settler
leadership was bent on "achieving" more violent scenes than occurred last
summer, and that the government may not have exhausted every effort to find
alternatives to a violent confrontation. Such a descent into violence should
be a source of shame and deep concern to us all."
Hatzofeh refers to yesterday's events at Amona and deplores the conduct of
Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his ministers. The editors also
strongly criticize the Israel Police senior command and the High Court of
Justice.
Yediot Aharonot reviews Hamas's victory in the recent Palestinian elections
and says that, "Hamas, as is known, cannot print money and does not have any
oil reserves in the Gaza dunes. In order to implement even a few of its
promises, it will need considerable foreign assistance. This is the lever
with which to apply international pressure, not only so that it will
'refrain from terrorism and recognize Israel' but so that it will annul the
main points of its covenant. As long as the covenant is valid and
constitutes Hamas's basic document, all financial assistance and
international recognition to this movement will sow a three-fold
destruction - of the Palestinian economy, of the chances for dialogue
between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and of the buds of democracy
and liberalism in the Middle East."
