SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
-------------------------------------------
(Government Press Office)
16-May-2006

Ma'ariv - http://www.maariv.co.il
Yediot Aharonot - http://www.ynetnews.com

Haaretz comments: "Israel must talk with the legitimate representatives of
the Palestinians. At present, in the wake of elections held with Israel's
consent, legitimate Palestinian representation is shared by Mahmoud Abbas
and Hamas. As a counter to the menacing "tsunami" of Islamic terror in the
Middle East, as forecast by former Military Intelligence chief Aharon
Ze'evi, we can build a tall fence, we can minimize the points of friction by
evacuating settlements, and we can kill senior terrorists responsible for
attacks; and we can also try to lower the heat with a "tsunami" of non-stop
meetings between the sides, both direct and indirect, official and
unofficial - all with the aim of reaching a mutually agreed evacuation of
the occupied territories and the handing over of the keys in an orderly
fashion to the Palestinian Authority. In any event, we should not respond
with automatic dismissal and smugness to any sign of moderation on the part
of Hamas, even when the organization's formulations are not perfect and the
armed conflict continues."

The Jerusalem Post writes: "At a steady rate of about 500 deaths per year,
vast numbers of Israelis are losing their lives needlessly. Yet the UK,
France and Australia have proven that road deaths can be reduced by half or
more over just a few years, mainly by introducing national automatic speed
camera systems... A full nationally deployed speed camera system would save
hundreds of lives annually and save many billions of shekels of losses for
the government and the economy. The idea that we 'cannot afford' a speed
camera system is absurd. We cannot afford to delay deploying one from the
human, moral, economic, and budgetary perspectives...[Transportation
Minister Shaul] Mofaz may regard his current post as a step down from his
previous position as defense minister. If he wants, however, he can increase
the size of the speed camera test project and accelerate its deployment,
thereby saving untold numbers of Israeli lives. That is power that he did
not have before, and that perhaps no other minister has to the same degree
now."

Hatzofeh believes that, "The High Court of Justice majority decision to
prevent Palestinians who marry Israeli citizens from receiving permanent
status in Israel is accepted by the majority of Israeli citizens." The
editors assert that, "It must not be forgotten that Israel is a Jewish
state," and note that other countries place various restrictions on foreign
nationals' residency rights.

Yediot Aharonot warns that the American and European intellectual elites are
preparing to adopt an accommodating attitude toward extremist Islam,
including Hizbullah, Hamas, and Iranian President Ahmadinejad.
